Discussion: Social Media Marketing

Using social media to market your own business

It seems that not many of us are using social media to market our own businesses. Some have profiles on one or more sites, but aren’t actively networking there.

Social media is all about being where your target market is and coming from a place of support and help, rather than trying to make sales. This is true always, but especially during the current pandemic, as discussed last month. Right now a lot more people than usual are spending time online, so it would be worthwhile to take advantage of this, especially since we’re unable to attend live networking events and face-to-face meetings.

Some of the ways to support others through social media are by sharing positive vibes and posting information about relevant events and tying them in with what’s happening right now. For example, Salma is typically involved with Earth Day events in the local community, so since these can’t take place, she’s posting tips on what people can do from their homes and encouraging them to plan things they can do when the world opens up again.

It’s important to target the right people. If your posts are too generic, you’ll find that instead of attracting a wider audience, you won’t really resonate with anyone.

Posting on social media can sometimes feel like entering a big room and shouting something, hoping someone might notice. It’s much more effective if you try to engage with others. This can best be done by participating in Twitter chats, Facebook groups, and other situations that encourage conversation. We talked about that last month too.

Providing social media support to clients

A few of us are currently offering these services. What is needed and how much depends on the client. We didn’t actually spend a lot of time discussing this.

Things worth exploring

  • TikTok for short videos. Demographic tends to be younger people but more and more people are using it all the time so it may have potential even if you’re targeting older clients. Possible applications could be for dance studios or timelapse videos of organizing or other projects.
  • Instagram with Intention course –  learn about hashtags and stories
  • Alignable

If you currently offer social media marketing support to clients, please tell us what services you offer in the comments.

As often happens, we touched on other topics as well. Some of the things that came out of our discussions were:
